On Newsstands: Italian Vogue's ALL "Black" Issue

For the July 2008 issue of Italian Vogue, one of today’s most influential American photographers, Steven Meisel, has chosen to photograph only models of African decent.

Even more impressive, all surrounding Italian Vogue features are related to black women in the arts and entertainment.

Could this fashion industry interest in diversity be in part the influence of Barack Obama prevailing as the Democratic Presidential Nominee?

"We are already seeing and feeling the effects of the overdue tide of CHANGE right down to the uber-judgmental fashion industry," comments Marva Bradshaw, Account Manager with Cox Radio, on the controversy surrounding Obama and the July Italian Vogue issue.

"Here in Italy, everybody is crazy about Obama, even people who never talk about American politics. It’s the new way to see a country where something can always happen. It’s a young country and modern,” said Franca Sozzani, Italian Vogue Editor.

Day after day, I am increasingly convinced that the greatest impact the U.S. has on other cultures is our uncanny ability to influence, through the media. Our culture and way of life is always under a microscope and on a global scale, in the spot light of the camera lens.

[From L to R: Liya Kebede, Sessilee Lopez, Jourdan Dunn and Naomi Campbell]

Models in the issue include: Tyra, Tocarra Jones, Iman, Naomi Campbell, Alek Wek, Liya Kebede, Pat Cleveland, Jourdan Dunn, Sessilee Lopez, Chanel Iman, Veronica Webb, and Karen Alexander.

"There was no hip-hop gangsterism, no ghetto fabulousness, no bling-bling clichés," said Edward Enniful, the stylists who worked on the shoot. "Meisel simply shot a beautiful story with one of the most important icons [Naomi] of this century."

The monumental issue hits newstands in Europe this Thursday, and will be available in the U.S. soon after...

Finally, art truly imitates life!

The Buzz about Songstress, Ruby Velle!

Here at K. Melanie, we're excited at the prospect of working with soul songstress, Ruby Velle.

Ruby Velle is the talented lead signer of the Soulphonics, a soul/ funk band whose influences include James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Cold Blood, and The Temptations.

The Soulphonics present a fresh new take on the re-emergence of the well established genre of live-band soul music.

The genre has been re-energized by the new sensation,
Amy Winehouse and the long-standing, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, "who are widely considered to be at the forefront of a revivalist movement that aims to recapture the essence of soul and funk music at its height in the late 1960s to mid 1970s."

Ruby Velle and The Soulphonics are currently working on their full-length Sophomore album to be released at the end of this year.

As a solo artist, Velle has been working on projects with writers such as Kristie Kaine of Kaine and Raine Publishing, producer/ DJ Mr. Mind of the Autobon Society, and noted musician/ producer, Wester Joseph.

You can catch this soul songstress in concert in Georgia and Florida with stops throughout the south.

Here's a clip of the single "Stand up," off their forth-coming album, captured by a spectator at a recent show. This girl can sang!

Divas on "The Drive"

This week, we have a client preparing for a major publicity occurrence. Downtown Divas Boutique - Miami will be shooting an appearance on a local entertainment program, Deco Drive, for a Summer Must-haves spot.

Deco Drive is a popular daily entertainment news magazine that airs at the optimal time of 7:30 p.m. (and again at 11:30 p.m.) right after the number one watched evening news cast in south Florida, or so I'm told, and just before prime time television.

Noted entertainment reporter, Aubrey Aquino will be hosting the appearance. We're looking forward to a smooth shoot. I'll post the final product in the coming weeks.
